There are restaurants that impress with exceptional cuisine, and then there are destinations that create an experience so complete that every moment feels carefully curated. AURUM Restaurant, located on the seventh floor of The Leonardo in Sandton, belongs firmly in the latter category.
Fresh from being crowned Best Restaurant in Sandton and Best Restaurant in Gauteng at the South Africa Restaurant Awards, while its sister venue Alto234 secured the title of Best Bar, AURUM continues to set the benchmark for luxury dining in South Africa.
On Thursday evening, the Republic Africa team was invited to experience firsthand what has earned AURUM its growing reputation as one of the country’s premier dining destinations.
From the moment the Republic Africa team arrived at The Leonardo — the tallest building on the African continent — it was immediately apparent that this would be far more than a restaurant review. It would be an immersive journey through hospitality, culinary artistry, and elevated luxury.
Our evening began with a warm welcome from Richard Moseby, General Manager of AURUM Restaurant, whose passion for hospitality is evident in every detail of the guest experience. Alongside him was Head Chef Michelle Biondi, whose creative vision continues to position AURUM among the country’s most respected culinary destinations.
As the elevator doors opened onto the seventh floor, we were welcomed into a space that effortlessly balances sophistication with warmth. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the Sandton skyline, while soft ambient lighting, elegant décor, and refined finishes created an atmosphere that felt both luxurious and inviting.
AURUM’s interior design reflects modern elegance at its finest. Every element has been thoughtfully considered, from the contemporary furnishings to the subtle gold accents that pay homage to the restaurant’s name, which translates to “gold” in Latin. The environment is refined without feeling intimidating, creating a space where guests can comfortably celebrate special occasions, conduct business meetings, or simply enjoy an extraordinary evening out.
Upon arrival, the Republic Africa team was welcomed with a bottle of wine, setting the tone for an evening defined by exceptional hospitality. The service throughout the evening was attentive, polished, and genuinely warm. Every member of the team displayed a level of professionalism that made guests feel valued without ever feeling overwhelmed.
As conversations flowed and the city lights began to illuminate the skyline, the culinary experience commenced.
The starters showcased the kitchen’s commitment to precision, flavour, and presentation. Beautifully plated and thoughtfully balanced, each dish demonstrated Chef Michelle Biondi’s understanding that great cuisine should engage every sense. Every ingredient had purpose, every element complemented the next, and every plate arrived looking like a work of art.
The main course elevated the experience even further. Rich flavours, expert execution, and meticulous attention to detail came together seamlessly. The kitchen’s ability to combine contemporary culinary techniques with approachable, memorable flavours is what distinguishes AURUM from many fine-dining establishments. Rather than relying on complexity for the sake of complexity, the cuisine celebrates quality ingredients and allows them to shine.
What became clear throughout the evening was that AURUM understands something many restaurants overlook: luxury is not simply about appearance. It is about consistency. It is about ensuring that every guest interaction, every course, and every detail contributes to a singular, exceptional experience.
The evening concluded with a beautifully executed dessert that provided the perfect finale to an already remarkable dining journey. Elegant, indulgent, and perfectly balanced, it left a lasting impression and served as a fitting conclusion to a menu designed to delight from beginning to end.
Beyond the dining experience itself, Richard Moseby and Chef Michelle Biondi graciously invited the Republic Africa team on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the restaurant and kitchen.
Stepping into the heart of AURUM’s operations offered a fascinating glimpse into the precision and teamwork required to maintain such a high standard of excellence. The kitchen operated with calm confidence and remarkable efficiency. Every station, every chef, and every movement reflected a commitment to craftsmanship and consistency.
It was here that we truly appreciated the dedication behind every plate that reaches a guest’s table.
Yet the evening’s most breathtaking moment was still to come.
The team was then escorted to the 57th floor of The Leonardo, home to Alto234 — officially recognised as the Best Bar at the South Africa Restaurant Awards.
As the elevator doors opened, Johannesburg revealed itself in spectacular fashion.
Perched high above Africa’s richest square mile, Alto234 offers one of the most extraordinary views on the continent. The rooftop destination provides a stunning 360-degree panorama of Johannesburg, stretching endlessly across the horizon. From this unparalleled vantage point, the city transforms into a sea of lights, architecture, and energy.
The experience is nothing short of magical.
Standing above the city as the sun fades into the evening skyline offers a rare perspective of Johannesburg’s beauty, ambition, and scale. It is easy to understand why Alto234 has become one of the city’s most sought-after destinations for sunset cocktails, celebrations, and unforgettable moments.
Together, AURUM Restaurant and Alto234 represent the pinnacle of hospitality within The Leonardo. One delivers an award-winning culinary experience, while the other offers a world-class rooftop destination unlike anything else in South Africa.
Their recent recognition at the South Africa Restaurant Awards serves as a testament to the dedication, innovation, and consistency displayed by their teams every day.
For the Republic Africa team, the evening was a celebration of everything that makes hospitality exceptional. It was about more than food. More than service. More than luxury.
It was about creating moments.
Moments of connection. Moments of discovery. Moments that remind us why great restaurants continue to play such an important role in our lives.
AURUM has not only earned its titles as Best Restaurant in Sandton and Best Restaurant in Gauteng — it continues to demonstrate exactly why those honours were deserved.
For those seeking an unforgettable dining experience in Johannesburg, AURUM is not simply a recommendation.
It is a destination.
